Lebanese Chutzpa: Pay Us For The War We Started
by Omri Ceren
If the definition of chutzpa is the child who kills his parents and then begs the judge for leniency because he’s an orphan, then surely starting a war and then demanding reparations from the other side is a close second:
Lebanon is preparing to go to an international tribunal to seek reparations from Israel for damage caused during last year’s month-long war, the country’s finance minister Jihad Azour said on Monday.
Speaking at Johns Hopkins University, Azour declined to say which court or international tribunal Lebanon would petition and added that the case is still being prepared. Israel invaded southern Lebanon in July after Hizbullah guerrillas captured two of its soldiers in a cross-border raid.
Quick review:
(1) Hezbollah - at that time a sitting member of the ruling Lebanese government - committed an act of war against the State of Israel.
(2) Hezbollah received public sanction for their acts from Lebaense Prime Minister Siniora:
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora thanked Hizbollah on Sunday for its “sacrifices” in its war against Israel. “We are in a strong position and I thank the Sayyed for his efforts,” Siniora said when asked about a Saturday statement by Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah calling on the government to take advantage of Hizbollah’s steadfastness against Israeli military might.”I also thank all those who sacrifice their lives for the independence and sovereignty of Lebanon,” he added.
(3) The State Department, not to mention the implicit assumptions and the explicit language of the internationally binding ceasefire, recognize that the conflict was between the governments of Israel and Lebanon.
So we don’t think it’s unfair to say that there’s something about this latest aggrieved cry of victimization that leaves us cold.
