You said that paranoid politics were somehow an unintended "side effect" of their work. You offer no evidence of this, and nothing to counter all the evidence to the contrary. Their paranoid world view is essential to their appeal, to their ideologies and to their identities. Without it, what would they be?

I agree with you that their followers are not all crazy, although they are wrong to some degree. And, as I've shown, some are indeed crazy.

2) How was I snide? You're being a bit oversensitive. I took you at your word and made counter-arguments. Nothing wrong with a good argument, is there?

3) There's no need to publish your email. I just wanted to identify who was saying what.

Feel free to continue reading here and to comment or not comment in the future.Adam Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245468599571473818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-6234598389272844992010-03-07T13:19:44.990-05:002010-03-07T13:19:44.990-05:00One last time, hopefully this one will be posted. ...One last time, hopefully this one will be posted. I was contrasting people who put their complete faith in their government with those who put their complete faith in anti-government conspiracy theories.

I can empathize with someone who has to deal with attacks from Ron Paul supporters every day, but snide responses to honest and respectful comments are probably not the best way to gain a loyal following.

I will not be back.jhimmihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14168608663221541192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-58734997835082691682010-03-07T13:11:33.963-05:002010-03-07T13:11:33.963-05:00The person who posted the previous two comments ha...The person who posted the previous two comments has attempted to post a comment which both criticizes the harshness of the tone of my replies to him and uses an obscenity to describe me. I've decided not to post this comment. He's welcome to repost it without the *!?$#@ obscenity. Did you miss that? If it was your comment, your forgetfulness rivals that of Glenn Beck.

2) You ask: "Are implying every person (and their are millions) who became more politically aware as a result of Beck and Paul is a crazy anti-government, anti-semitic militia member?"

I don't believe that all of the Paul/Beck followers are crazies of the kind you describe. I also don't believe that, as you repeatedly say, they've become more politically aware from listening to Paul or Beck.

Both Paul and Beck indoctrinate their followers in the politics of paranoia. While not all of their followers are as paranoid as those I quoted in this post, they are part of the spectrum of paranoid, anti-government beliefs. Both Paul and Beck promote conspiracy theories as the basis of their beliefs.

While I'm glad to see that you mock the militia movement and anti-government extremism as paranoid, how can you hold this view and still support Beck and Paul? Are you troubled by the fact that they disagree with you on this?

One last thing: do you believe that Beck and Paul are part of a single movement / ideology? Your comment (comments?) seem to indicate that you do.Adam Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245468599571473818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-39745824635331705192010-03-07T11:46:12.066-05:002010-03-07T11:46:12.066-05:00Nowhere did anyone say Glenn Beck and Ron Paul are...Nowhere did anyone say Glenn Beck and Ron Paul are opposites of anti-government conspiracy mongers - simply that they have acted as a catalyst in motivating people to inform themselves. In many cases (my own, for example), that process results in a rejection of many of the ideas that sparked the process.

Your knee-jerk reaction to my comment is what's laughable. Are implying every person (and their are millions) who became more politically aware as a result of Beck and Paul is a crazy anti-government, anti-semitic militia member?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-39242632456190227862010-03-07T11:04:13.094-05:002010-03-07T11:04:13.094-05:00The idea that Ron Paul and Glenn Beck are on the o...The idea that Ron Paul and Glenn Beck are on the opposite side of a pendulum swing from anti-government conspiracy mongers is so obviously false as to be laughable. They attract paranoid followers precisely because they advocate paranoia as political ideology.

Ron Paul and his associates tend to view American history in conspiratorial terms as the struggle of "elites" to take power away from the states and give it to the federal government. For this reason, they believe our worst presidents to have been Lincoln and FDR, viewing both the Civil War and World War II as the result of conspiracies (or even a single conspiracy) to consolidate federal power. They tend to be 9/11 truthers, Pearl Harbor truthers, believers in bankers conspiracies, and opponents to the "New World Order", the latter being a catch-all conspiracy which can represent whatever current evil catches their fancy.

I'm all for the people becoming more involved in public affairs. I'd like to see greater participation in labor unions, political parties, etc. And I'm all for the people getting out to protest should they be so moved. But I don't like to see populism descending into the John Birch madhouse.

With respect to Beck, unlike Ron Paul, he does not have a fixed, or even coherent, ideology. Within a single interview he can both strongly argue that President Obama is a racist, then deny that he is calling Obama a racist. Arguing with Beck would be like wrestling a jelly fish. He's much too slippery and the potential rewards are nil. I don't take him seriously at all, and those who do do so at their own risk.Adam Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245468599571473818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-46679726991188129052010-03-07T10:04:20.556-05:002010-03-07T10:04:20.556-05:00The benefit of people like Ron Paul and Glenn Beck...The benefit of people like Ron Paul and Glenn Beck is to awaken people who previously put complete trust in the federal government, or 'the system'. It is making people who formerly had no interest in politics or history become educated in both.

However, with that benefit, there is the inevitable side effect of people who swing in the opposite direction, people who put their unquestioning faith in wild, anti government conspiracy theories.

The side effect should not contaminate the broad movement of the American electorate becoming more informed and involved; rather, it should spur people who haven't gone off the deep end to rescue others who are teetering on the edge.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-14428805495002954202010-03-05T17:19:57.700-05:002010-03-05T17:19:57.700-05:00As it happens, those who post on the Ron Paul Camp...As it happens, those who post on the Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty Forum are approved by the website's administrators. The application process requires that they reveal their real identities and contact info. The Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty publishes blog posts at their discretion. They can choose to delete offensive material or ban problem bloggers. They are responsible for what appears there.

Moreover, the bloggers there frequently identify themselves on the website, as I indicated in my post. One that I quoted is the head of the local Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty organization in his hometown and the author of a self-published anti-Semitic book. Another is a racist, far-right talk show host.

Needless to say, I did not plant the material I quoted. Do you suspect that I'm also behind the other works these people publish? I find it interesting that you should suspect a nefarious conspiracy set this up. Even when attempting to disassociate the Ron Paul campaign from conspiracy theories, you resort to them yourself.

With respect to my employment, I'm doing fine, but thanks for your concern.Adam Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245468599571473818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-77680283387271484192010-03-05T15:54:13.103-05:002010-03-05T15:54:13.103-05:00So you take posts that ANYONE can make, and assign...So you take posts that ANYONE can make, and assign the views in them to Ron Paul and the Campaign for Liberty.
