I doubt that it would motivate Jesse Jackson, Jr. to Israel. Thanks for confirming my argument about that. In spite of our disagreements, we agree that Jackson didn't travel for the money, as Silverstein falsely charged.

2) I would defend anybody who was subjected to the sort of racist attack Silverstein made. Denying the horrors of Jim Crow, slandering black people with racist stereotypes, mocking black speech and calling Jackson a "negro" were all unacceptable. Thanks for confirming that as well.

3) Christians are permitted to immigrate to Israel. That's a factual error.

4) Israel has racists and non-racists, like any country. I strongly encourage you to advocate for the rights and interests of minorities in Israel or wherever racism exists. I don't buy the argument that it's worse in Israel than elsewhere, however.

5) Rep. Jackson DID meet with Palestinian leaders so your point about him not doing so makes no sense.

6) Rep. Jackson's main focus on his trip was promoting a resumption of the peace process between the PA and Israel. That bugs you. Why?

7) The idea that Jackson just wants cash and has "handlers" buy into the racist ideas of Silverstein. You use the imagery of racist right to oppose progressive ideas like peace and justice, and you hypocritically do so in the name of supporting progressive values. My hope is that this contradiction is so obvious that few will find your arguments against Jackson's peace advocacy convincing.Adam Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245468599571473818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-77493680531464024152011-08-27T11:31:32.489-04:002011-08-27T11:31:32.489-04:00If Congressman Jackson went to Israel for only eig...If Congressman Jackson went to Israel for only eight thousand bucks AIPAC got him cheap. It cost them a lot more to buy the seat once held by a really courageous woman, Cynthia McKinney.

I wonder if Holland would defend black honor with such passion if Jackson were supporting the Palestinians instead of the Zionists. If Jackson lived in Israel (which is impossible, because Christians are not permitted to immigrate to Israel, only Jews) he would find out that Israeli racism would make it hard for him to find a home, a school for his kids, and of course, any position in the government. Ask the Ethiopian Jews who come here.

At least when his father, Reverend Jesse Jackson came to Israel, he spent time with the Palestinians, hearing their concerns.

Saddly, the father has worked hard to build a good life for his family, so that his son, young Jesse, can enrich himself, and ignore the victimization of other minorities (not black, not American) who he is too busy to worry about. Father Jackson has lived the life and done his homework. He knows that Netanyahu is not going to make a fair peace with the Palestinians. Son Jackson takes the pocket money, and repeats what his handlers tell him.scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18410675326661380504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-45110964891165152752011-08-23T08:53:17.282-04:002011-08-23T08:53:17.282-04:00What I said the other day at Harry's Place:

That post identified by name neither Jackson, nor any of the other junketeers. And Silverstein explained why he rendered it as “whorin’ and schorring’.” What is unfortunate about Adam Hollander’s mistaken read of the “whorin’ and schnorrin’,” and the repitition of that mistake by commenters here is that it gives Silverstein and his supporters something to deny, and rightly so, while distracting from all that is truly outrageous in what he/they say.

Now, did anyone see that in another recent post about the slaughter in Eilat, Silverstein, the self-styled “Zionist” (how is that for being delusional?), likened Marwan Barghouti, who is in prison because he was convicted for complicity in the murder of five (5) Israelis, to Martin Luther King? Breathtaking! That likening of Barghouti to MLK, and the situation of Palestinians today to that of African-Americans during the time of Jim Crowe, speaks volumes about Silverstein, and it is that sort of thing attention should go, not to “whorin’ and schnorrin’.” (And to be clear, while there is no case to be made about dropping of those terminal “g”s, there is a big and important one to be made about all the outrageous things Silverstein packed into the balance of his posts on this subject.)dcdocnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-69393544511564264702011-08-22T16:10:23.406-04:002011-08-22T16:10:23.406-04:00In a further dispute, in response to my post about...In a further dispute, in response to my post about meeting with Hamas, he stated that

'The charter is a no no. However, I find him calling Nixon a 'man of peace' as opposed to Netanyahu to be grossly offensive; many of my schoolmates were the refugees and the children of said refugees that were displaced as a result of the alleged 'man of peace'.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4718120950252476804.post-46594106019320762562011-08-21T19:04:20.268-04:002011-08-21T19:04:20.268-04:00Richard Silverstein's grossly inappropriate us...Richard Silverstein's grossly inappropriate use of the word "negro", although he intends it to be ironic, compounds the racial insensitivity of his use of racist stereotypes in his earlier post on the subject. Of course, if Israelis use weapons like F-15s, it would seem even more important to use non-violence in response, since the discrepancy is that extreme.

Actually, I was first going to suggest that Silverstein's racism doesn't necessarily invalidate his points about the Palestinians (poisoning the well fallacy) and that you should have focused less on his first sentences and more on the racism of the rest of his posts. He writes:

***all well and good if you’re fighting for civil rights in Alabama in 1967, since the only weapons used against you were German shepherds and fire hoses (with the rare assassination thrown in for purposes of intimidation).***

This is, in fact, not true. There were many other tactics of terrorism and torture used in that place at that time against black and white protestors for civil rights. I don't recall the IDF pouring acid in Palestinian swimming pools.

***Martin Luther King and Jesse Jackson’s dad never had to face F-16 jets and Apache attack helicopters in their day. If they had, I’d guess they’d have had to adopt a different set of tactics to gain their freedom.***

That's a fallacy. Protesting individuals and protesting crowds in the West Bank do not have to "face ... jets and ... helicopters" What do they have to face? They have to face soldiers operating with the same crowd control responsibilities as riot policemen, with comparable weaponry.

Helicopters and jets are only used against militants, who are neither protesting, nor prime facie -- Silverstein is begging the question -- peaceful.

Silverstein is hanging an argument for the morality of paramilitary tactics on desperate wordplay.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
